Who Wants to Walk With Me?

I've been feeling very activist lately, which is good, seeing as I have been falling off the Darfur activist trail lately, which is bad. Anyways, the Walk for Darfur campaign is running once again this year. For those who don't know Walk for Darfur is a walk from Calgary to Edmonton by a group of Grant MacEwan students to raise awareness of the situation in Darfur. They are having a Welcome Walk to finish up their campaign. The walk is on Sunday May 4. It starts at Ikea and ends 15km later at Grant MacEwan college. I am intending on attending. Does anyone want to join me? It will be a great experiance and you will be helping to draw attention to a serious humanitarian crisis. Am I going to have to bribe people with cookies? Because I'll go there, you know I will.

I Am Legend Revisited

So I just watched I Am Legend for the second, but this time I watched the "alternate version with controversial ending". The whole movie was the same, except for the end. I didn't see what was so controversial about it. Can someone explain to me why this ending was so controversial. Is it perhaps that there is nothing controversial about it, but that is just in fact a marketing scheme? What? I'm shocked... would they really do that? Knowing that putting a word like controversial on the cover of the dvd would make people who saw the movie in theater, but were not impressed enough to buy it, actually in fact buy it? I wasn't actually one of those people, I genuenly enjoyed the movie when I saw it the first time, so did Jon, he bought it.

Chant Down Babylon

So a year ago when I started talking about a personal Olympic boycott, the response I got was an "oh Stephanie" and a pat on the head. Well, how about now? My reasons for the boycott were in protest of China's relations with Sudan and thus their support of the paramilitary actions against the people of Darfur. Now, with all of the activity in Tibet that has been making the news, how can you support the Olympics being in China? Look people, this has nothing to do with supporting our Canadian Olympic athletes. That doesn't matter, people are dying. I love the Olympics, they are absolutely my favorite sporting event, but I cannot justify watching them when they are being held in a country who does not hold to the ideals of the Olympic games. So on August 8, for the first time in as long as I can remember, I will not be tuning in to watch the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. I urge others to consider similar actions.

A passing that must be noted on Lefthandedsocks

This week the Science Fiction community lost one of it's best. Sir Arthur C. Clarke passed away at the age of 90 this past Wednesday. His contributions to the genre of Science Fiction will be enjoyed for decades to come. My personal favorites of his are Childhood's End and Ghosts from the Grand Banks.

New Apartment

I have moved into my new apartment. It is the apartment that Jon and I will live in after we are married. Yay. Which, by the way, is only 4 months and 12 days away:) I'll post pictures of the new place on facebook when I get fully unpacked.
